3. Angry Birds
Rovio Entertainment probably never predicted its casual puzzle video game featuring birds being launched at pigs would become so successful; but, by July 2015, their bird-vs-pigs franchise had been downloaded over three billion times across its various games!
Angry Birds was designed to take advantage of both mobile gaming’s ever-growing popularity, and the increasing accessibility and usability of touch screens on smartphones. Its simple but addictive gameplay, colorful graphics, and social media integration made it appealing to an extensive array of gamers; moreover, its revolutionary monetization strategy pushed developers away from in-app purchases towards user acquisition and engagement strategies instead.
Angry Birds has quickly expanded beyond games with spin-offs, sequels and licensed merchandise including clothing, toys and household items. Most recently, Rovio released The Angry Birds Movie which is currently showing in theaters; Rovio is so confident in this avian empire it plans on expanding it further by producing TV shows and movies featuring this flock.
No one knows for certain how long Angry Birds will remain a top mobile gaming title, but one thing is clear: its success has revolutionized the industry in unprecedented ways. Its success has inspired other developers to produce engaging games with intuitive gameplay that appeal to players of all ages and demographics, broadening both video gaming’s mainstream appeal as well as increasing awareness about its benefits. Furthermore, their merchandising campaign demonstrated that video games can serve more than simply entertainment; they can serve as cultural symbols as well.
Battlezone was an innovative video game of its time, pioneering 3D graphics with popular titles. Additionally, it pioneered first-person perspective shooting games – making it the direct ancestor of every first-person shooter ever created. Atari created Asteroids in 1979 using a vector display unit similar to that used for Atari’s earlier game Asteroids. Ed Rotberg designed Atari 2 using this vector display unit and Owen Rubin created an exploding volcano; Roger Hector designed tanks and enemy graphics. Gameplay in Tank War 2 is simple – players control a tank from a first-person perspective on an arena filled with various objects including slow and fast “super” tanks, guided missiles, boxes and pyramids for shelter, periodic saucer-shaped UFOs that do not attack but may be shot for bonus points, etc.
Battlezone features stunning visuals that give an authentic virtual reality battlefield feel, helping suspend disbelief for players. While its controls may initially prove challenging to master, once familiarization sets in it becomes easy to progress through the game. Battlezone was popular enough that it was eventually ported across various home computer systems including Atari 2600, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and Sinclair ZX Spectrum as well as Atari XEGS and Lynx computers during its peak popularity period in the 80s.
Battlezone first hit PCs back in 1998 by Activision, and since has been transformed by Rebellion Developments into a virtual reality game for PlayStation VR. Due out later this year, this new version will utilize procedural and random elements in order to keep its Hex campaign maps interesting and fresh.
The original Portal remains one of the most innovative first-person puzzle games ever developed, featuring groundbreaking physics systems, creative thinking features and an engaging story arc that set a standard for other developers to push their genre further. Created by a group of college students in 1998, Portal changed the face of video gaming as it proved it could do much more than shoot stuff. With innovative physics systems, creative thinking elements, and an intriguing narrative structure all rolled into one, Portal set an unprecedented example for other creators who sought to push limits of their genre further than ever before.
Chell must navigate various test chambers using a portal gun which creates visual links between two locations in 3D space. Unlike many games of its time, Portal’s portals were not limited to flat surfaces like walls or floors and could instead be placed anywhere along walls, ceilings or floors, leading to unexpected geometries and gravity effects. Players must solve physical puzzles to reach each room while dodging antagonist GLaDOS and reach its end successfully.
Not only is Portal an amazing puzzle game, it is also an outstanding science fiction thriller. With its stark laboratory setting and unflinching antagonist, as well as GLaDOS’ humorous dialogue and end credits song, this unique sci fi story delivers on every front. Furthermore, Portal serves as a spiritual successor for Valve’s larger Half-Life franchise.
